If you’re a sports coach, you probably care about your players very much. This means you would most likely care if they suffered a dental emergency while they are on your court, track, or field. Unfortunately, many oral injuries occur during sports, and it’s important to do all you can to help your players maintain strong and healthy mouths. Our dentist, Dr. Sindhu Gundabathula, is happy to tell you how you can do so.

The first thing you should do is encourage your players to wear a mouthguard. This is especially important if you coach a high-contact sport, like football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, and even karate. Mouthguards are strong appliances that can protect your players’ teeth when hard, forceful objects hit the mouth. This can help them avoid knocked-out, chipped, and broken teeth.

The second thing you should do is have a dental emergency plan. Tell each player how to care for a knocked-out, broken, or chipped tooth or even how to deal with an injured jaw or tongue. Also, make sure they have their dentist’s contact information in their telephone so you can call the office and schedule an appointment if a dental emergency does occur. It’s important that they see their dental professional as soon as possible.
