Did you know that bruxism can have a negative effect on your oral health? Bruxism, also known as teeth-grinding, is a common disorder that often is done unconsciously while a person sleeps, and results in teeth grinding and gnashing together, producing a variety of oral health ailments.
Bruxism is most commonly discovered by others, including sleep partners or roommates, who can easily notice and detect any loud teeth grinding noises that you may be producing as you sleep. Another common sign of bruxism is with the teeth themselves, as they can appear flat or worn, or even show signs of chipping and cracking that may have occurred.
Another common sign of bruxism is an increase in tooth sensitivity, which is often strongest after you wake up. This can often be accompanied by an increase in jaw pain or soreness. Damaged cheek tissue, a locked jaw, and pain similar to earaches are also common signs. Bruxism can also lead to or result from TMJ disorders and sleep apnea.
